Representing 1800 sporting goods companies from all over Europe and beyond, FESI recognises EWoS as a concrete initiative for the active promotion of physical activity, which creates a positive impact on people’s health and the European economy.

Active lifestyles

From FESI’s perspective, an important factor in the successful promotion of regular physical activity is the availability of quality sports equipment that is adapted to people’s needs. Active lifestyles result in numerous benefits ranging from improving public health to boosting individual physical and mental wellbeing and encouraging social inclusion.

Unfortunately, physical activity levels among younger generations have been in decline for some time, particularly during the pandemic, which drastically limits children’s access to team sports and sport infrastructures. In present-day Europe, where one in five children is overweight or obese, this has not escaped the attention of FESI and its partners.

“We all know that active kids perform better in their classrooms, communities and future careers, yet today’s generation is the least active in history,” says Jérôme Pero, FESI Secretary-General.” Less than 30% of children receive 60 minutes of daily physical activity recommended by the World Health Organization.”

This issue has been a central focus for the organisation since the beginning of its involvement in the European Week of Sport.

European School Sports Day

In line with this, FESI is renewing its partnership with the European School Sports Day which takes place on 24 September 2021. The Day encourages students to be active through participation in sporting events at school. This also empowers students to be leaders and advocate for health and fitness. FESI has launched a call among its members to support this by collecting sporting goods to donate to participants. Hundreds of items of sports equipment have already been collected, with more being distributed ahead of EWoS.

With its headquarters in Belgium, FESI is involved in organising on-site sport activities at a Belgian school, where it will also distribute sporting goods. In addition, the FESI organisation itself will also get active for #BeActive Night on September 25th. All FESI employees are invited to come to the office in sneakers and sportswear, and to jog through Brussels’ Parc Royal wearing #BeActive and FESI-branded t-shirts. A fitting way to spread the #BeActive message!
