European Week of Sport kicks off in Copenhagen

The 2025 European Week of Sport is officially open! The opening ceremony of the 10th anniversary of the Week included urban sport activities, workshops, and the initiation of new partnerships.

A milestone opening in Copenhagen

The 2025 European Week of Sport officially kicked off on 23 September in Copenhagen with an event combining sport, celebration, and partnership building.

Glenn Micallef, Commissioner for Intergenerational Fairness, Youth, Culture and Sport welcomed guests at GAME Streetmekka, an award-winning urban sport facility known for promoting social inclusion.

Around 150 guests attended the kick-off event, including

  • national coordinators and partners of the Week
  • international and grassroots sport organisations
  • NGOs, local authorities and young people.

Commissioner Micallef reflected on the growth of the initiative.

In 2015, we launched the Week with 7,000 events in 34 countries. During the decade that followed, the European Week of Sport has expanded to 42 countries and regions, reaching more than 100 million people at over 350,000 events. We couldn’t have achieved this massive success without the work of our national coordinators and partners.

Celebrating 10 years of EWoS

His Majesty King Frederik X of Denmark joined Minister for Culture Jakob Engel-Schmidt and Commissioner Micallef for the symbolic highlight of the evening.

It was a basketball activity to celebrate 10th anniversary of the European Week of Sport. Each person took 10 shots, to symbolise 10 years of the initative.

Cheered on by the audience, the moment captured the spirit of participation and inclusivity at the heart of the Week.

The evening also featured

  • a lively dance energiser by GAME volunteers
  • sport workshops in basketball, dance, street football and parkour
  • an inspirational speech delivered by Danish Olympic champion Pernille Blume.

In his address at the event, Commissioner Micallef also underlined the challenges ahead.

The European Week of Sport is a reminder of sport’s power to unite people and communities. I hope that the 2025 edition will inspire as many citizens as possible to scroll less and move more, especially young people. Sport and physical activity can help us to live healthier, more satisfying lives. It strengthens our bodies, sharpens our minds, and makes us more resilient to life’s challenges. I encourage everyone to #BeActive, engage with their local communities and make the most of the European Week of Sport on its 10th anniversary.

Welcoming new partners

A key moment of the opening was the signature of partnerships with five new partners of the Week.

  • European Athlete as Student (EAS)
  • European Fair Play Movement (EFPM)
  • European Mountaineering Association (EUMA)
  • Eurosport (Warner Bros Discovery)
  • European Club Association (ECA)
