European Week of Sport 2024: bringing people together in nearly 40 countries

The European Week of Sport (EWoS) is an annual event that encourages citizens across Europe to enjoy a more active lifestyle. For the 2024 edition, thousands of events took place in nearly 40 countries.

Sport beyond borders

During the last week of September and into October, the #BeActive call resonated in

  • the 27 EU countries
  • countries belonging to the Erasmus+ family such as Iceland, Liechtenstein, North Macedonia, Türkiye and Serbia
  • the Western Balkans (including Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Kosovo)
  • the so-called “Neighborhood East” countries (Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Moldova, and Ukraine)

Athletes and sports enthusiasts alike gathered for a series of flagship events.

Citizens of all ages and fitness levels were encouraged to try out number of sports and re-discover their favourite activities with the support of sport federations, local clubs, schools, health organisations, and National Olympic Committees.

Marathons, wrestling, quiet walks in the park, football, tennis tournaments – whatever they chose, people were able to find their true calling and enjoy incredible moments with their friends and loved ones.

Numerous national #BeActive ambassadors, including Paris 2024 Olympic Games medallists, provided a motivational boost, not only in the online #BeActive campaign but also at several flagship events.

Exploring amazing locations through sports

From the Freedom Square in Yerevan, Armenia, to the Rustavi City park in Georgia, through to Dede Gorgud Park in Baku, Azerbaijan – to name a few. Many beautiful places served as venues for sporting activities during the European Week of Sport beyond borders, as the EWoS organised in countries outside  the EU is often called.

Let’s #BeActive all year long

The European Week of Sport might be over now, but our love for sport continues.

For this reason, keep following our social media accounts on Facebook, Instagram, and X to check out the latest updates, the European Week of Sport highlights video, and contributions from the EU Olympic and Paralympic Ambassadors.
