New study on athletes’ rights in and around big sport events published

In line with the EU Work Plan for Sport 2021-2024, a study on athletes’ rights in and around big sport events was commissioned.

The study aims to map, define and discuss the rights of European athletes participating in major sporting events. It focuses on three main areas

  • sport governance in athletes’ representation
  • global politics and the use of social media
  • mental health

This research seeks to understand the main challenges athletes face as well as identify best practices to protect their rights and well-being. It considers also the social and cultural importance of major sporting events, the political and public pressures, and the media attention driven by social media.

Furthermore, it provides also valuable insights and evidence to support European policymakers and helps them to understand the importance of protecting athletes' physical and mental well-being.
