The European Week of Sport connecting us beyond borders

This year’s edition of the European Week of Sport was the occasion to celebrate a #BeActive lifestyle together with the Western Balkans and Eastern Partnership countries and regions for the third time.
In this context, the “Expert Seminar on the European Week of Sport Beyond Borders" took place on 11 November 2020.
The online event gathered participants from EU Member States, Erasmus+ Programme countries and 8 countries and regions from the Western Balkans and Eastern Partnership. Its aim was to share good practices and initiate discussions regarding EU funding opportunities and ways to adapt the sport sector to the constraints of the Covid-19 pandemic measures.
Highlights of the event included
- keynote speech by Sergey Bubka, Olympic champion and President of the Ukrainian Olympic Committee
- shared experiences, videos and photos from the Eastern Partnership and Western Balkans participants on the activities organised during the Week
- insights from representatives of Ireland, Malta, Portugal and the Netherlands about the organisation of the Week and the #BeActive campaign in their countries
A specific attention was given to innovative ways to adapt to the current challenges, focusing on how to #BeActiveAtHome.
The second session tackled the current and future EU funding opportunities in the field of sport for the Western Balkans and Eastern Partnership. Participants welcomed the perspective of a strengthened cooperation thanks to the next Erasmus+ programme and new initiatives such as “EU4Youth: European Week of Sport Beyond Borders in the Western Balkans”.
Background
The European Week of Sport was launched in 2015 to bring awareness on the importance of having an active lifestyle. The Week aims to give people across the world a strong incentive to be active. Since 2018 and in the spirit of bringing people together, the initiative is opened to the Western Balkans and Eastern Partnership countries and regions.
