Study: The European Commission publishes rapid review of good practices in sport diplomacy

The final report of the Study on Sport Diplomacy: Identifying good practices has been published. The study was carried out in the framework of the European Commission's work on the third EU work plan for Sport (2017-2020), at the invitation of the EU Member States.

Informed by ten case studies, the  report includes an inventory of good practices and a review of potential EU funding sources for international sport projects.

According to the findings, projects that align directly with the priorities of the member states’ international development objectives, and therefore support the funding country’s wider international development and diplomacy efforts, work better than projects that don't share these priorities. In addition to this, the most successful projects have a strong focus on the capacity-building and upskilling of organisations in third countries, helping to ensure the long-term sustainability of the project approaches.

The study concludes with four recommendations. Presented during the Sport Diplomacy Seminar organised by the  European Commission in Brussels on 6 December 2017, the recommendations were also supported by many of the participants from the worlds of politics and sport.

Finally, the study recognises the important role of sport in the EU's external policy and in international relations in general and contributes to developing the European Commission's sport diplomacy priority.
