Volunteering through sport: get involved and #BeActive

Sport-based volunteering is a great way to be active, gain skills and support your community. There's something for everyone – including opportunities via Erasmus+ and the European Solidarity Corps.

Volunteering in local sports is a great way to be active and help your local community

Volunteering: Active body, active mind

Being active doesn’t always mean running laps or hitting the gym. Across Europe, people are getting moving by volunteering in sport – coaching a local kids’ football team, helping out at a charity fun run, or supporting inclusive sport days in schools.

Volunteering through sport is a powerful way to #BeActive while giving back. It’s social, energising and good for your physical and mental well-being. What’s more, it gives you the chance to develop practical skills like teamwork, leadership and organisation.

Get involved – in your community or abroad

Looking for inspiration about where to start? Wherever you are in Europe, you can volunteer to help organise or participate in European Week of Sport events in your community - whether it’s running fun kids’ activities, leading warm-ups or managing sports challenges.

In Malta, for example, SportMalta supports sports organisations in recruiting volunteers for events, including European Week of Sport campaigns, through the Sport Volunteer Register Scheme - ensuring that communities have the support needed to bring #BeActive events to life.

Go further

You can also look further afield. The European Solidarity Corps supports young volunteers join short or long-term sport-related projects across Europe, such as inclusive games, youth tournaments or active ageing campaigns.

Meanwhile, Erasmus+ offers opportunities to join or even set up sport-based exchanges and training with peers from other countries.

What’s more, tools like Europass can help you plan your volunteering path, share your profile with organisations, and track the skills you gain along the way.

Make your move

Why not volunteer to lead a warm-up at a charity walk, organise a local badminton evening, or join a school sports day? Even simple actions like supporting a neighbourhood running club or helping at a community football pitch can have a big impact.

Volunteering keeps you moving, boosts your confidence, and helps you connect. It’s a brilliant way to live the #BeActive spirit – now and into the future.
