On the Move programme

The Ministry of Education and Culture of Finland carries out a national 'On the Move programme' that aims to promote an active and healthy lifestyle throughout the lifespan of a person.

Description of the Pledge

The Ministry of Education and Culture of Finland will carry out a national 'On the Move programme' that aims to promote an active and healthy lifestyle throughout the lifespan of a person, through a well-coordinated common work and cross-sectorial cooperation at national, regional and local levels.

'On the Move programme' family includes the following programmes

  • Families on the Move
  • Joy in Motion / Early Childhood Education and Care on the Move
  • Finnish Schools on the Move
  • Studies on the Move
  • Adults on the Move
  • Older People on the Move

The programmes aim to promote a physically active lifestyle by increasing physical activity and decreasing sedentary behavior through cross-sectorial cooperation at national, regional and local levels.

The key actions of the programmes are

  1. Overall coordination of measures and communications
  2. Support and development measures for local authorities and projects subsidised through state funding
  3. Monitoring and follow-up of funded projects and other measures
  4. Creation and activation of cooperation networks
  5. Regular evaluation of programme effectiveness

Expected measurable outcomes

  • Raising awareness of healthy and active lifestyles in Finnish society through 'On the Move programme' including On the Move –conference and On the Move -video and other communication material
  • Developing common evaluation system (indicators of success and effects/effectiveness planned together with the programmes)
  • Developing a better and stronger coordination and synergy model between the programmes of 'On the Move' family
